Designer Report: Paula Scher
Class Project
Project: For this project, I was tasked with designing a report to pay homage to a renowned graphic designer with a brochure recounting his or her life and career. Always having admired her work, I chose the iconic and influential, Paula Scher.
Key Research Insights: I began my research for this project by diving into Scher’s graphic design work from her iconic logos, to her distinct poster designs, to her collection of maps. In addition to the classic logos that can be seen daily, Scher is known for her bold posters and design work for The Public Theater.
Big idea: A report on Paula Scher formatted to emulate her work for The Public Theater
Solution: In order to mimic this style that Scher used for The Public, I chose to use unorthodox spacing and to mix bold font colors and weights. But, to give the eclectic style my own twist, I chose a bit more of a muted color palette, with a pastel blue and off-white to balance the bright oranges and pinks. This style allowed me to play around with nontraditional formatting to create interesting compositions. I also was sure to honor her famous gradient posters by including a gradient spread on pages 2-3.
